Inside this edition

How the book is organised.

One thousand high-frequency words in three Parts, from the essential glue words to the ones you already half-know to the rest by theme.

Polish has a reputation for being hard, and its seven cases, three genders and paired verbs earn some of it. Vocabulary is the easier half. A small core of words does most of the work in everyday Polish: the 1,000 headwords in this book represent about 70% of word occurrences in the frequency data behind it, so learning them first pays off from the opening chapter.

The book starts with the glue of every sentence, w, na, być, mieć and the little się, then turns to the words Polish hands you for free: identical twins spelled the same as English, the -cja rule that turns informacja into information on sight, and words you can guess once you know where to look. The rest of the thousand come by everyday theme, people, home, work, time, places, nature and feelings, so related words stay together instead of scattering down a frequency list.

Every entry gives the word, its IPA and a plain-English respelling with the stressed syllable in capitals, its meaning with the gender of every noun and the aspect partner of every verb pair, and three example sentences, each glossed word by word beneath the Polish with a natural translation underneath. The key verbs come with a conjugation table, each Part ends with a short test, and the answer key and an alphabetical glossary sit at the back.

  1. 01Start here: the essential wordsThe pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions and core verbs every Polish sentence leans on, with conjugation tables for być, mieć, móc and chcieć
  2. 02Words you already knowIdentical twins spelled like English, the -cja rule (informacja, sytuacja, stacja, all feminine) and words you can guess once you know where to look
  3. 03By themePeople and family, home, work, time and numbers, places, nature, feelings, everyday actions, describing, talking and ideas
  4. 04Three sentences per entryWord-by-word English glosses beneath the Polish, a natural translation underneath, and the headword picked out in every sentence
  5. 05Grammar and pronunciation up frontReading the respellings, the seven cases, gender, aspect, się, double negatives, pan and pani, a dozen prefixes that build hundreds of words, numbers, dates and a short list of false friends
  6. 06Tests, answer key and glossaryA test at the end of each Part, answers at the back, and every word in Polish alphabetical order

A short optional chapter at the end turns any Russian you already know into a head start on Polish.

The method

Why this edition.

01

Learn patterns, not lists

Random word lists fade fast. Grouping by pattern, cognate and theme gives every new word a hook, so it stays learned and the next word in the group comes easier.

02

Say it from the first page

Every word carries IPA for precision and a plain-English respelling you can simply read aloud, with the stressed syllable in capitals. Polish spelling is regular, and the pronunciation key shows how to read the clusters, nasal vowels and soft consonants that put people off.

03

Gender and aspect built in

Every noun shows its gender, every verb pair prints its aspect partner, and the key verbs come with a conjugation table, so the information that shapes a Polish sentence sits right in the entry.

04

The words Polish gives you for free

Polish -cja is usually English -tion, and a whole chapter of words is spelled the same as English or nearly. Once you know where to look, hundreds of the thousand are recognition rather than memorisation.

05

Check yourself as you go

A short test closes each Part, with a full answer key at the back, and the alphabetical glossary lets you look any word up by its spelling.
