Inside this edition

How the book is organised.

One thousand high-frequency words in three Parts, each chapter built around a pattern or a theme.

Turkish looks hard on the page for one reason: it spells its grammar as endings. Evimiz is our house, evde is at home, evden is from the house, and a single dictionary word can turn up in dozens of forms. There is good news hiding in that. Turkish has no gender, no article and almost no irregular verb, and the spelling tells you the sound of every word. What a learner needs is the core words, and a way of seeing the endings clearly.

This frequency reader gives you both. Its 1,000 headwords cover an estimated 71.4% of word occurrences in modern Turkish, and they are organised into groups rather than one long list: the essential words first, then the words you already know (telefon, üniversite, doktor, müzik), then everyday themes from family and home to work, feelings and conversation. Every entry gives the IPA and a plain-English respelling with the stressed syllable in capitals, and three example sentences glossed word by word, with each ending shown as its own hyphenated piece: house-our, sea-to, come-ing-you. Stem changes, required endings and conjugation tables for the most common verbs sit beside the words that need them. Each Part ends with a test-yourself section, with the answers at the back, and an alphabetical glossary lists every word in the book.

The method

Why this edition.

01

See the endings, piece by piece

Turkish says with endings what English says with separate words. The glosses show each one: evimiz is house-our, evden is house-from, geliyorsun is come-ing-you. After a few hundred sentences the stacking reads itself.

02

Built on frequency

These 1,000 headwords cover an estimated 71.4% of word occurrences in modern Turkish, counting every suffixed form each one stands for, so your early effort lands on the words you will meet everywhere.

03

Two ways to say every word

Each entry carries precise IPA and a plain-English respelling with the stressed syllable in capitals, so you can read the examples aloud from the first page, before you know a single rule.

04

Start from what you know

Turkish took hundreds of words from Europe and kept them recognisable. Part Two gathers them, from film and doktor to telefon, üniversite and müzik: sound each one out and the English appears.

05

Grammar where you need it

Stem changes, required endings and conjugation tables for the most common verbs appear beside the vocabulary, and the test-yourself sections at the end of each Part keep it learned.
